Learn About Squirrels and Squirrels Feeders

There are more than 200 species of squirrels in the United States, including tree squirrels that live in trees and ground squirrels that live underground. Squirrel feeders are mainly prepared for tree squirrels. Before setting up a feeder, understand the habits of squirrels.

Habits of squirrels

  • Sociability: Most squirrels are solitary animals, especially tree squirrels. They usually live alone and move around in their own territory. If you want to set up a squirrel feeder, first consider setting it up in an area where squirrels are active.
  • Foraging habits: Squirrels are omnivorous animals and have the habit of "storing food", especially nuts. They usually bury food underground or hide it in tree holes so that they can take it when food is scarce in winter. Squirrels have a high preference for nuts (such as acorns and pine nuts), so when preparing food for squirrels, try to focus on nuts or grains.

Common types of squirrel feeders

  • Hanging feeders: These feeders are usually hung from a branch or stand and offer nuts or seeds that the squirrel can climb up to get the food.
  • Ground feeders: This type of feeder is designed to be placed on the ground and is usually a box or platform that can hold the food. The squirrel can get the food directly from the ground.
  • Rotating feeders: These feeders are designed to be more interesting and usually require the squirrel to rotate the device to get the food. This design can prevent birds or other animals from easily approaching the food.
  • Squirrel "challenge" feeders: These feeders usually contain some challenging elements, and the squirrel needs to solve certain puzzles (such as rotating, pressing buttons, etc.) to get the food. These devices are often used to increase viewing fun and can also improve the squirrel's intellectual activities.
